The bliss of Rumi’s and Hafiz’s poetry

December 14, 2015

I have loved Rumi so long I don’t remember how I got introduced to his poetry.  Hafiz (sometimes spelled Hafez) came a bit later, and similarly swept me off my feet.  Why am I sharing this?  Just because.

Let yourself get taken along by it, let it wash over you and within you, speak it lovingly out loud, and see how you feel afterward.  See how it moves you, about God (whatever your word for God), about love, about life. There is no right or wrong response to their words.  Just feel.  Just because.

I hope it reaches you deeply and you will share the bliss with others.

For a day, just for one day,

Talk about that which disturbs no one

And bring some peace into your

Beautiful eyes.

-- Hafiz

I caught the happy virus last night

When I was out singing beneath the stars.

It is remarkably contagious -

So kiss me.

-- Hafiz

Here soar

Not with wings

But with your moving hands and feet

And sweating brows -

Standing by your Beloved's side

Reaching out to comfort this world

With your cup of solace

Drawn from your vast reservoir of truth.

-- Hafiz

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of it's furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

--Rumi

Dance when you're broken open.

Dance when you've torn the bandage off.

Dance in the middle of fighting.

Dance in your blood.

Dance when you're perfectly free.

Struck, the dancer hears a tambourine inside her,

like a wave that crests into foam at the very top,

Begins.

Maybe you don't hear that tambourine,

or the tree leaves clapping time.

Close the ears on your head,

that listen mostly to lies and cynical jokes.

There are other things to see, and hear.

Music. Dance.

A brilliant city inside your soul!

--Rumi

Now

That

All your worry

Has proved such an

Unlucrative

Business,

Why

Not

Find a better

Job.

-- Hafiz

Be empty of worrying.... Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open? Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking

-- Rumi

The small man

Builds cages for everyone

He Knows.

While the sage,

Who has to duck his head

When the moon is low,

Keeps dropping keys all night long

For the

Beautiful

Rowdy

Prisoners.

-- Hafiz

Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.

-- Rumi

Be melting snow. Wash yourself of yourself.
-- Rumi

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.
-- Rumi

Inside this new love, die.
Your way begins on the other side.
Become the sky.
Take an axe to the prison wall.
Escape.
Walk out like someone suddenly born into color.
Do it now.
You’re covered with thick cloud.
Slide out the side.
Die,
and be quiet.
Quietness is the surest sign
that you have died.
Your old life was a frantic running from silence.

The speechless full moon comes out now.
-- Rumi

Love is the cure,

for your pain will keep giving birth to more pain

until your eyes constantly exhale love

as effortlessly as your body yields its scent.

-- Rumi

We are

People who need to love, because

Love is the soul's life,

Love is simply creation's greatest joy.

Hafiz

Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living

In better conditions.

Hafiz

Ever since happiness heard your name, it has been running through the streets trying to find you.

Hafiz

Come, whoever you are! Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving. This is not a caravan of despair. It doesn’t matter if you’ve broken your vow a thousand times, still and yet again come!

-- Rumi

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.

-- Rumi
